Solution Solar Battery
I installed a solar battery last spring, mostly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. My rooftop panels were already doing the daytime work, but excess generation disappeared into the grid after lunch. I chose a lifepo4 120v battery because the installer said its lithium iron phosphate chemistry would handle daily cycling without much fuss.
The installation took most of a day, including a new hybrid inverter, wall disconnect, and monitoring app. What surprised me was how ordinary the change felt after commissioning. On sunny days, the battery charges by early afternoon, then carries our refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and heat-pump water heater through the expensive period. I set the backup reserve at thirty percent, so there is still emergency power if the grid fails.
That setting has already proved useful during two short outages; the transfer was automatic, and my freezer never warmed noticeably.
The real highlight is the bill difference. Before storage, my utility bill regularly jumped above two hundred dollars in summer, especially when we ran air conditioning after dinner. This year, even with similar weather, our highest bill has been about one hundred thirty dollars. The battery is not magic; savings depend on charging from solar rather than the grid. Still, shifting those kilowatt-hours into peak hours has made the investment feel tangible. My monitoring app shows roughly eight to ten kilowatt-hours discharged most evenings, which is enough to cover our basic load until bedtime.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the inverter stopped exporting and the battery sat idle for an afternoon. I power-cycled the communications dongle, checked the Wi-Fi connection, and restarted the inverter from its control panel. Support confirmed the update had changed an operating mode, and sent the correct settings that evening.
Since then, it has been boring, exactly what I wanted.
