Verifying my solar battery after installation was less exciting than watching the first evening bill drop, but that is exactly why I bought it.

I have a 6.4-kWh lithium iron phosphate storage battery connected to my rooftop solar inverter. Before storage, my panels produced plenty of energy at noon, then I bought electricity back from the grid between 5:00–9:00 p.m. The battery now charges during the day and carries the house through those expensive peak hours. My utility bill fell from about $142 to $96 during the first full month, even though our weather was fairly cloudy.

The biggest difference is nighttime behavior. I run the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and one bedroom air conditioner from stored power. On a normal sunny day, the battery reaches 100% by around 2:00 p.m. and sits ready until sunset. By bedtime, it is usually around 35%, so I still have a reserve for outages.

I also experimented with a small DIY pack built around an "eve 18650 35v" battery configuration, but I kept it separate from the main home energy storage system until I understood the battery management system and fusing better. The phrase appeared in the seller’s listing, and it was a reminder not to trust a voltage label without checking cell chemistry, balancing, and proper protection.

My only real hiccup came during a three-day rainy stretch. The inverter stopped charging at 62% and displayed a low solar input warning. I first suspected a loose MC4 connector, but the actual cause was a dusty panel and a shaded chimney. After cleaning the panel and moving a branch, charging resumed normally the next morning.

That lesson made me appreciate the monitoring app.
