2,400 watts of solar on my roof used to feel like wasted potential once the afternoon sun disappeared. I added a 10 kWh lithium solar battery last spring, and the biggest improvement has been getting through the expensive evening hours without pulling much from the grid.
Our utility charges more between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., which is exactly when we cook dinner, run the dishwasher, and use the air conditioner. Before the battery, those hours pushed our electric bill noticeably higher. Now the solar panels charge the battery during the day, and the battery powers the house after sunset. On a typical summer day, I see the system cover about 6–8 kWh of evening usage. My monthly bill dropped from roughly $180 to $95, although weather and air-conditioning use still make a difference.
The installation was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery beside the main electrical panel, added a hybrid inverter, and connected the essential circuits. I chose to back up the refrigerator, internet equipment, lights, and a few outlets rather than the whole house. That kept the cost reasonable and gives us enough comfort during short outages.
One small troubleshooting moment happened during the first week. The monitoring app showed the battery at 100%, but it was not discharging after sunset. I eventually found that the system was still set to “solar self-consumption” with a reserve level of 30%, and the evening schedule had not been enabled. After changing those settings, it worked normally.
I also keep a small 12v to 240v inverter for camping and emergency charging, but it is separate from the home battery system. For me, the real value is not total energy independence. It is using my own solar power later, avoiding peak rates, and having quiet backup power when the grid briefly fails.
