Solution Solar Battery
After adding a 10 kWh home battery last spring, my evening electricity routine changed more than I expected. I live in a small three-bedroom house with six rooftop solar panels, and before the battery I sent most afternoon production back to the grid for a modest credit. Then, around dinner, I bought power again at the expensive peak rate. The battery now charges from the panels and carries us through the evening.
My best comparison is July. Before installation, our utility bill averaged about $185. Last July, with similar air-conditioning use, it was $92. I still paid the connection fee and bought some electricity overnight, but avoiding those 4–9 p.m. peak-hour prices made the biggest difference. On a sunny day, the battery usually reaches 100 percent by early afternoon. After cooking, laundry, and the kids' showers, it sits around 45 percent at bedtime. The overnight reserve is set to 20 percent, so we have some backup without sacrificing too much daily savings.
The app has been surprisingly useful. I can see solar production, battery state of charge, and household consumption without walking to the garage. I also learned not to obsess over every fluctuation. One evening the battery stopped discharging, and I initially blamed the inverter. It turned out the system had entered a temporary grid-support mode after a brief voltage dip. I restarted nothing; it recovered on its own in about ten minutes.
I keep a small EV cargador on a separate schedule because charging the car and running the heat pump together can drain the battery quickly. That simple timing change has made the system feel practical rather than complicated. I am not completely energy independent, but my solar battery is reducing peak purchases every day, and the quieter, steadier bills are exactly what I personally hoped for.
