prismatic lifepo4 battery

Running my evening routine changed after I added a 10-kWh solar battery to our system. Before that, our solar panels produced plenty during the day, but we still bought expensive electricity after dinner.

The installer mounted the battery in the garage, connected it to an inverter, and set it to charge from solar first. I chose a prismatic lifepo4 battery because the quoted cycle life and usable capacity seemed better suited to daily cycling than the cheaper option.

What I notice most is the peak-hour savings. Our utility charges more from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. The battery usually reaches full by early afternoon, then carries the refrigerator, internet equipment, lights, and television through dinner. When the heat pump runs, the battery helps, although I have not tried to make it cover the entire house overnight.

Our monthly bill fell from roughly $165 to $105 during the first comparable months. That is not a perfect test because weather and usage vary, but the difference is obvious. I now avoid pulling grid power during the highest rates, which feels more valuable than watching the panels produce energy at noon.

I did have one small troubleshooting moment. The app showed the battery at 18% one evening, even though the sun had been strong. I found the backup reserve setting had accidentally been raised to 20% during a firmware update. After lowering it back to 10%, normal charging returned the next day. Since then I check the state of charge once a week, not constantly.

For me, the solar battery has been less about energy independence and more about making ordinary electricity cheaper. It quietly does its job, and that is exactly what I wanted.
