I installed my solar battery last summer, mainly because my electricity bill kept jumping during the evening peak period. My rooftop panels were producing plenty of power during the day, but by dinner time I was still buying expensive grid electricity. Adding a 10 kWh LiFePO4 battery changed that routine more than I expected.
The setup itself was fairly straightforward. The installer mounted the battery in the garage, connected it to a hybrid inverter, and configured it to charge from solar first. I set the backup reserve at 20%, so the battery normally discharges through the evening but keeps enough energy for a short outage. On a sunny day, it usually reaches full charge by early afternoon. From around 5 p.m. until bedtime, it runs the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, television, and often the washing machine.
The most noticeable result is my peak-hour usage. Before the battery, our evening consumption was regularly 8 to 12 kWh. Now the utility meter barely moves during those hours. My monthly bill has fallen by roughly 35%, although the exact savings depend on weather, heating use, and the utility’s rates. I especially notice the difference during weekends, when we are home more and use appliances later in the day.
One small troubleshooting moment happened after a firmware update. The battery stopped discharging at its normal rate and showed a warning in the monitoring app. I restarted the inverter, checked the battery communication cable, and contacted the installer. They remotely adjusted one setting, and everything returned to normal the same evening. Since then, I check the app every few days rather than constantly.
I chose a LiFePO4 battery because I wanted a safer chemistry and a long cycle life.
