I finally added a home battery to my rooftop solar system last spring, and the difference showed up most clearly after dinner. Before that, my panels produced plenty during the afternoon, but I was still buying expensive electricity from the grid between 4:00 and 9:00. I lowered it to 15% for winter, but kept 25% for summer storms because our outages can last overnight.
I’ve also learned that battery savings depend on timing, not just capacity. I run the dishwasher and laundry after sunrise when possible, leaving stored energy for evening cooking. The app makes that easy to watch, although I still check meter readings a week. This small solar battery setup feels less like high-tech equipment and more like a quiet bill stabilizer.
