After six months with my home solar battery, the biggest change has been how much less I worry about peak-hour electricity rates. My 6 kW rooftop solar system usually fills the 13.5 kWh lithium battery by mid-afternoon, even on ordinary sunny days. The battery then powers the house from around 4 p.m. until bedtime, when our electricity use is normally highest.
Before installing energy storage, I was sending excess solar power back to the grid during the day and buying electricity again in the evening. That felt wasteful. Now the battery inverter automatically switches over when solar production drops. I still use some grid power overnight, but my monthly bill has fallen by roughly 35–45%, depending on the weather. During a particularly sunny month, the saving was close to $70 compared with the same period the previous year.
The most useful feature has been the battery monitoring app. I can see solar generation, household consumption, and battery charge level without guessing. I noticed our dishwasher was running during the expensive period, so I changed its schedule to late morning. That small adjustment, combined with the solar battery, made a noticeable difference.
I did have one minor problem during the first week. The battery stopped discharging at about 30%, even though the app showed a higher usable capacity. I checked the settings and found that the installer had enabled a conservative backup reserve. After confirming the change with them, I reduced the reserve to 15%. I kept a larger reserve during storm season, but for normal days the extra capacity is helpful.
I also keep an aa lithium rechargeable battery charger in the garage for small household devices, although it is separate from the main lithium iron phosphate battery system. Overall, the solar battery has not eliminated my electricity bill, but it has made our energy use more predictable and practical. The best part is using power I generated myself after sunset instead of buying it at the most expensive time.
