6 months ago I added a 10kWh LiFePO4 battery to my rooftop solar system, mainly to stop exporting cheap afternoon power and buying expensive electricity after dinner. The installer finished in one day, and the setup was less disruptive than I expected. We mounted the battery beside the inverter in my garage, ran conduit neatly along the wall, and connected it to the existing solar array without changing the panels. I was relieved that the monitoring app showed battery state of charge, solar production, household load, and grid import on one screen.
The first evening I deliberately waited until peak pricing began before running the dishwasher and heat-pump water heater. The battery supplied them quietly, and I watched grid consumption drop to nearly zero. On sunny days, solar fills the battery by mid-afternoon; by bedtime, I still usually have 30–40% remaining. That reserve carries lights, refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and my circulation pump through most outages.
My utility bill has not vanished, but the expensive evening usage has fallen dramatically. Before storage, I averaged roughly $180 a month in winter. Now it is closer to $115, despite similar weather and household habits. The biggest surprise is how much self-consumption improved. My solar monitoring used to show about 55% self-consumption; recently, I am seeing 85–90%. That feels more worthwhile than simply watching panels export power during the day.
There was one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging overnight. I checked the settings and found a backup reserve had been reset to 100%. Lowering it to 25% fixed the issue immediately.
I keep a 36v lifepo4 battery charger for emergencies, but the main system needs little attention. That reliability and peak-hour savings for us during ordinary home use are the real win.
