Keeping my evening electricity use under control was the main reason I installed a battery system last spring. My setup is a 5kw growatt hybrid inverter 48V Battery paired with 10kWh of lithium storage and about 4.5kW of rooftop solar. I chose the system after watching my utility bills jump whenever the heat pump ran after sunset.
Installation was less disruptive than expected. The installer mounted the inverter in my garage, close to the main panel, and finished the wiring in one day. I spent the evening checking the app and feeling slightly obsessed with the battery state of charge. Seeing solar power fill the battery at lunchtime was surprisingly satisfying.
The biggest difference appears between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Before storage, I imported expensive peak electricity almost every night. Now the battery usually carries the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and heat pump through that window. On sunny days, it still has plenty left by bedtime. My monthly bill dropped from roughly $210 to $125 over the summer, although weather and rates obviously change. The battery savings are most noticeable on cloudy days, when I can charge during the cheaper overnight tariff and avoid the afternoon peak. That scheduling flexibility has made solar self-consumption much more useful than simply exporting surplus energy.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the inverter stopped discharging at my programmed evening time. The app showed “standby,” even though the battery was 78 percent full. I power-cycled the inverter, checked the time-of-use schedule, and discovered the update had reset my timezone. Correcting that fixed everything in about five minutes. That experience reminded me that a home energy storage system still needs occasional attention; it is not completely “set and forget.”
Overall, this storage system has made my solar investment feel practical.
