8:00 was when I started paying closer attention to my electricity bill, after installing a 280ah lifepo4 16s battery bank in my garage. I already had 6.4 kW of rooftop solar, but I was still sending plenty of afternoon energy to the grid and buying it back during the expensive evening hours.
The setup was more straightforward than I expected. My installer placed the battery beside the inverter, added a breaker, and configured charging from solar first. I spent an evening watching the app because I wanted to understand what it was doing. That first night, it discharged slowly after dinner, covered the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and our heat-pump standby load, then stopped at my 20% reserve. Seeing that graph move without any drama was satisfying.
The biggest difference shows up between 4 and 9 p.m. Before the battery, I would run the dishwasher, cook dinner, and use air conditioning while importing grid power. Now the battery handles most of that. Over the first month, my bill fell from about $210 to $68. Weather was normal, so I am not claiming every month will look identical, but the peak-hour savings were obvious. On sunny days, the battery reached 100% by early afternoon and carried us through bedtime.
I did have one troubleshooting moment. For three mornings, the app showed the battery at 47% instead of recharging overnight. I found that a firmware update had changed the charge schedule to a time window. I widened it, restarted the inverter, and everything returned to normal. Support answered my email promptly, and the fix was simple.
After several months, I am happiest with how boring the system feels. I do not think about peak rates nearly as much, and our evening routine no longer depends on whether solar is shining at that exact moment.
