I installed a lifepo4 24v x 150ah battery pack in my garage last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity during peak hours. My rooftop solar panels already covered most daytime use, but the surplus used to disappear back into the grid for a fairly unimpressive credit. The battery changed that routine almost immediately.
The setup was less dramatic than I expected. I mounted the battery beside the inverter, added a compatible charge controller, and had an electrician check the isolator and cable sizing. The app recognized the lithium battery within a few minutes. I set it to charge from solar first, then discharge from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m., when our utility rate is highest. That schedule suits our household better than trying to run everything overnight. We cook, use the dishwasher, and heat water after work, so those five hours matter most.
The savings showed up in the first full bill. Before storage, my monthly electricity bill averaged around $168 in summer. After installing the solar battery system, it fell to about $112, even though we had several cloudy days. That is roughly $56 saved, not counting the occasional grid outage. I am not pretending the battery pays for itself overnight, but seeing the evening energy usage come from stored solar instead of peak-rate electricity makes the investment feel worthwhile. The app also gives me a useful daily battery state-of-charge history, so I can tell whether a cloudy day affected performance.
I did have one troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the inverter stopped discharging at the scheduled time. The battery itself was fine; the app had reset the operating mode to backup-only. I switched it back to self-consumption, and normal cycling returned that evening. I now check settings after updates; the system has been reliable ever since.
