Every evening, after dinner, I used to glance at the electricity meter and wince when the expensive peak-hour rate kicked in. That changed after I installed a 10kWh home solar battery with a mecer inverter. My rooftop panels now charge the battery through the afternoon, and the system carries our lights, refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and television from about 5:30pm until bedtime. The difference is most noticeable on cloudy days, when I still have stored energy from the previous day.
Before the battery, I regularly saw a sharp jump in consumption during dinner and evening heating. Now I barely draw from the grid during those hours. Looking at my utility app, my peak-hour usage has fallen by roughly 60%, and my monthly bill is usually $45–$60 lower than last winter. It’s not a dramatic “off-grid” lifestyle; I still import power on wet mornings and in the early hours. But the battery does exactly what I wanted: it stores cheaper solar energy and uses it when the tariff is painful.
The practical part I appreciate most is the automatic changeover. When the grid briefly dropped last month, the lights flickered once and the battery took over without resetting the router. I only noticed because the inverter beeped. Later, I found the battery state-of-charge had dipped lower than expected because I had accidentally left a portable heater plugged in. That was a useful reminder that storage capacity is not unlimited, and high-wattage appliances can empty it surprisingly fast.
Since then, I set a reserve level of 25% and keep heating loads off the backup circuit. I also check the solar battery monitoring app once or twice a week, mainly to confirm charging and discharge schedules are behaving. So far, this combination of self-consumption and backup.
