280ah 12v

8 months ago, I added a 280ah 12v lithium battery to my rooftop solar system, mostly to stop exporting cheap afternoon power. I live in a two-bedroom house, and my daily electricity use is modest, so I wanted practical savings rather than an oversized backup installation for outages and emergencies.

The setup was straightforward, although I spent time checking cable sizes. I mounted the battery in a utility cupboard, installed a fuse and disconnect, and connected it to a 12V inverter and charge controller. My installer helped configure the low-voltage cutoff, which made me feel safer using stored energy overnight.

The biggest difference appeared on my billing cycle. Before the battery, our evening cooking, heating, and laundry pushed us into expensive peak hours. Now the solar battery charges around lunchtime, then runs the refrigerator, router, lights, and television after sunset. Our peak-hour consumption fell, and the bill dropped by about 28 percent.

That saving varies with weather, of course. On bright days, the battery reaches full charge by midafternoon, and I usually finish the night with plenty remaining. During cloudy days, it emptied earlier than expected, so I adjusted the inverter settings and stopped running the washing machine after dinner. That change helped.

I did have one troubleshooting moment. One morning, the monitoring app showed zero battery output even though the state-of-charge display looked normal. I checked things first, and found that a loose communication plug had appeared after a cupboard shelf bumped the cable. Reseating it restored the readings, with no damage.

After eight months, the battery performs well, and I like seeing solar production, load, and battery status instead of guessing. It has not eliminated my electricity bill, but it has made our energy use more predictable. For my home, the best value is shifting solar power into peak hours, not chasing independence.
