Every evening, I used to watch my electricity meter creep upward after dinner, especially when the heat pump, dishwasher, and water heater all ran together. Since installing a deye 5kw battery with my rooftop solar, that habit has mostly disappeared.
The setup was less intimidating than I expected. My installer mounted the battery in the garage beside the inverter, connected it to the solar panels, and set a reserve level so I would not drain everything during an outage. I chose a fairly conservative 20% backup reserve at first because I wanted reliable emergency power rather than squeezing out every last kilowatt-hour.
The biggest practical difference is during peak hours. Our utility charges more from 4–9 p.m., so the battery stores excess solar energy during the day and carries the house through dinner. On sunny days, I barely pull from the grid until bedtime. My monthly bill fell by roughly $45–$70, depending on weather and how often we run the air conditioner. It is not a dramatic zero bill, but the savings are predictable, and the battery has made time-of-use rates much less annoying.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment in the first month. The battery stopped discharging at about 35%, even though the app showed plenty of available capacity. I checked the settings and discovered the backup reserve had accidentally been raised after a firmware update. Lowering it back to 20% fixed the problem immediately. That taught me to look at the operating mode and reserve setting before assuming something was wrong with the solar battery.
After six months, I am happiest with the quietness and predictability. I do not notice the deye 5kw battery working.
