Solution Solar Inverter
I installed a 10kWh LiFePO4 battery storage unit beside my inverter last spring, mainly because our utility company had started charging painful evening rates. I already had rooftop solar, but once the sun went down, my house immediately began pulling from the grid. The battery has changed that routine more than I expected.
Before installation, I spent an evening comparing lifepo4 battery specifications, usable capacity, round-trip efficiency, continuous output, warranty, and the inverter's battery compatibility. I chose a model with enough power to run our refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and heat-pump circulation overnight, rather than chasing the biggest headline capacity. The installer finished in one day. He added a separate breaker, updated the inverter firmware, and showed me how to set a reserve percentage. I left twenty percent emergency backup, which has already proved useful during two brief outages.
The biggest practical win is peak-hour bill savings. On sunny days, solar charges the battery by early afternoon. At 4:00, it stops exporting and starts powering the house, so we use stored energy through the expensive window instead of buying it at the highest rate. My evening consumption is roughly 7–9kWh, and our monthly bill fell from around $185 to $110 over the first full summer, despite running the air conditioner. That is not a perfect apples-to-apples comparison, but the difference is obvious on the utility statements.
I did have one minor scare. One morning the battery showed 0% state of charge even though the app claimed it had charged overnight. I checked the cable connections and found nothing loose. After restarting the inverter, it came back at 78%. The installer later explained that a firmware update had interrupted the app's reading, not the battery level. Since then I check the monitoring screen, but I have not needed to change anything.
