Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
0nly after installing my solar battery storage system last spring did I notice the biggest change—not during sunny afternoons, but after dinner. My electricity plan charges noticeably more between 4pm and 9pm, so I wanted to stop buying expensive grid power every evening.
The setup is modest: a 12v lithium battery bank, a charge controller, solar panels, and a 2000w inverter 12v. I paid an electrician to check the wiring and add a fuse, battery disconnect, and ventilation clearance. Installing it took most of a Saturday, largely because we had to route cable from the garage to the utility area.
The useful part begins around 3pm. The panels top up the battery, and after 4pm the inverter runs my refrigerator, Wi-Fi equipment, lights, and sometimes the television. I avoid running the electric kettle and microwave together. At night, I check the battery monitor rather than guessing. On a weekday, it reaches bedtime with roughly 35% remaining.
My first full bill after installation was about 28% lower than the same month last year, despite similar weather and usage. The saving is not dramatic every day, but shifting those peak hours has made the battery worthwhile for us. During a cloudy week, I still saved some money.
I did have one troubleshooting moment. The system stopped discharging after I plugged in a space heater. The inverter showed overload, and I thought something had failed. I unplugged the heater, reset the inverter, and everything returned normally. That was a useful reminder that a 2000w rating does not mean every appliance is suitable, especially with startup surges.
Now I keep high-draw appliances off the backup circuit and reserve stored energy for essentials. This solar battery setup has not made me completely independent, but it has made evening consumption more predictable and my monthly bill less painful.
