Solution Solar Battery
After six months with my home solar battery, the biggest change has been how little electricity I buy during peak hours. I installed a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery beside my inverter, mainly because our utility’s evening rates had become painfully expensive. My rooftop panels usually fill the battery by mid-afternoon, and the system automatically switches to battery power around 4 p.m.
That timing has made a noticeable difference. Before adding storage, our air conditioner, refrigerator, cooking appliances, and evening lights all ran on grid electricity when rates were highest. Now the battery carries most of that load until about 9 p.m. On sunny summer days, I use almost no peak-rate power. Our monthly bill fell from roughly $180 to between $85 and $105, depending on weather and how much air conditioning we use. The savings are not dramatic every single day, but they add up quickly.
The setup itself was easier than I expected, although I did have one small troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging even though its display showed a healthy charge level. I checked the inverter settings and found that the time-of-use schedule had reset. I restored the evening discharge window, restarted the system, and everything worked normally again. That experience taught me not to rely only on the phone app; I now check the inverter screen once a week.
I also keep a small backup battery and a battery charger 12v in the garage for camping gear and emergency lights, but it is completely separate from my household solar battery. The main system is quiet, automatic, and easy to forget about, which is exactly what I wanted. During outages, it keeps the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and a few lights running. For me, the best value is not total energy independence; it is avoiding expensive evening electricity without changing how my family lives.
