Solution Solar Battery
I installed a 10-kWh home battery last spring, mainly to stop buying so much electricity during our utility’s expensive evening hours. Before that, our rooftop solar panels made plenty of power, but most of it went back to the grid at a modest credit. We still pulled energy from the grid after dinner, when the air conditioner, induction stove, and water heater were working hardest.
The installation itself was straightforward. The installer mounted the lithium battery beside the garage inverter and ran a new conduit through the wall. The crew finished in one morning, then showed me the monitoring app. I chose a reserve of 25 percent, so the battery could cover outages without keeping too much capacity unused every day. It is not a lithium camper battery, although it is familiar: store energy when it is available and use it later.
The biggest difference appears between 4 and 9 p.m. On sunny days, the battery charges to full by early afternoon. At 4 p.m., it begins discharging automatically, and I can see the power flowing from the battery instead of the utility. My bill dropped from roughly $190 to $105 during the hottest months. That savings varies with weather, but it has been more noticeable than the export credits ever were.
I did have one troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging for an evening because its temperature sensor reported a high reading after a hot day. The app showed the warning clearly, and support confirmed it was a protective pause, not a failure. It resumed overnight after cooling down.
After several months, I appreciate the quiet, predictable operation more than anything. I rarely think about the solar battery now; I check the state of charge and enjoy using stored solar power when rates are highest.
