I installed a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery in my garage last spring, after watching too much of our solar power disappear back to the grid during sunny afternoons.

The setup was less intimidating than I expected. The installer mounted the inverter beside the existing solar equipment, ran new conduit, and programmed the battery to charge from our panels before using stored energy during peak evening hours. My main concern was noise, but the system only makes a soft fan sound occasionally, quieter than our refrigerator.

The biggest difference showed up on the electric bill. Before storage, our utility charged roughly 30–40 cents per kWh between 4 and 9 p.m. We used to cook dinner, run the dishwasher, and cool the house at exactly the expensive time. Now the battery carries most of that load. Our monthly bill fell from about $180 to $95, even though our overall consumption stayed nearly the same. On especially sunny months, it has dipped below $80. That savings feels more real than the glossy payback calculator estimates because I see it every month.

One evening, the battery stopped discharging at 58%. I initially assumed a serious inverter fault. After checking the monitoring app, I found I had accidentally enabled a backup reserve setting after a firmware update. Lowering the reserve restored normal operation immediately. I also bought a lithium ion battery charger tester, mostly for checking a small backup battery I keep for outages; it was not needed for the installed home system, but it helped me understand voltage readings without guessing.

I like having backup power during short outages, but the daily peak-hour savings are why I would buy this solar battery again. It has turned our rooftop solar panels from a daytime generator into something useful after sunset.
