Solution Solar Battery
0nce I had my 10kwh solar battery installed last spring, I stopped thinking about it as equipment and started treating it like part of the household. Our installer mounted the battery in the garage beside the inverter and added a small energy monitor near the kitchen. Setup was finished in an afternoon, though the app took another day to show accurate readings.
The first few evenings, I watched the state of charge more often than I watched television. After sunset, the battery ran our refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and dishwasher, then switched back to grid at about 15%. We programmed it to charge from excess rooftop solar during the day and discharge between 4pm and 9pm, when our utility uses its highest time-of-use rate.
By July, this schedule made the biggest difference. My evening demand used to push us into the expensive tier, but the battery covered most of it. On a sunny weekday, it delivered roughly 7.5kWh before midnight. My bill fell from about $186 to $119, even though the air conditioner ran frequently. That is not a spectacular number every month; cloudy weeks were much less impressive, and winter savings should be smaller. Still, the change was obvious when I compared identical billing periods.
One evening, the app showed the battery at 62%, but our house was pulling from the grid. I checked the breaker and found the inverter in standby after a brief power flicker. Cycling it did not help. I contacted the installer, who had me disable and re-enable backup mode. The system resumed within ten minutes, and it has not repeated. I appreciated that the fix was simple, although I saved the support number afterward for emergencies.
For me, the win is quieter evenings, lower peak-rate usage, and knowing the solar power I make gets used.
