4:30 a.m. is usually when my solar battery starts doing its quiet work. I installed a 10-kilowatt-hour lithium iron phosphate battery last spring, mainly to avoid buying expensive electricity during our utility’s 4–9 p.m. peak window. Before that, I watched my solar panels produce plenty at noon, then watched the house pull from the grid after dinner.
The difference showed up immediately on my bill. On sunny days, the panels fill the battery by early afternoon. Around 4:00, the inverter switches the house to battery power, so the oven, refrigerator, and heat-pump water heater run without pulling from the grid. My monthly bill fell from roughly $180 to $95, although weather and thermostat settings make that vary. The biggest surprise is how much calmer I feel during outages. We had a two-hour outage in January, and the battery carried our lights, Wi-Fi, freezer, and gas furnace blower without any drama. I only noticed when the neighbors’ porch lights went dark.
Setup was not completely painless. My installer had to adjust the battery reserve setting because the first configuration discharged too deeply overnight.
