Yesterday, I checked my electricity app before making coffee, and smiled when I saw the battery had carried our house through the expensive evening hours.
I installed a 10kWh gyll lifepo4 battery beside my inverter last spring, mainly because our utility company had introduced time-of-use pricing. The installation was less dramatic than I expected. Our installer mounted the wall bracket, connected the battery to the hybrid inverter, and spent most of the afternoon checking cables, firmware, and backup settings. I appreciated that they explained the battery management system rather than simply leaving me with an app and a manual.
The first week was mostly about learning my household's rhythm. Solar panels charged the pack during daylight, and the inverter automatically stopped drawing from the grid when rates climbed at 4pm. By dinner time, the battery was usually around 70% full. We run the dishwasher, clothes dryer, and heat pump without buying much peak-priced electricity. On sunny days, I often finished the night with 25% remaining, which gave me confidence for the next morning.
The biggest practical change appears on my monthly bill. Before storage, my family used roughly 18kWh from the grid during peak periods each month, especially after work. Now that number is usually below 4kWh. My bills have dropped by about $45–$60 per month, depending on weather and heating demand. The battery has not eliminated electricity costs; I still pay fixed charges and buy power during long cloudy stretches. Still, the savings feel real because they come from shifting usage, not from wishful estimates.
I did have one minor scare in December. The battery stopped discharging at 6pm, even though its state-of-charge showed 48%. After checking the inverter screen, I found a backup reserve setting had been changed during a firmware update. Restoring it solved the problem.
