Nearly eight months ago I had a solar battery installed beside the garage after getting tired of watching my electricity bill jump every summer. The main setup is a 10 kWh lithium battery paired with rooftop panels and an inverter 6kw.
The installer arrived on a rainy Tuesday, but finished the wiring in one day. I appreciated that they explained the battery storage settings instead of simply leaving me with an app. We set the system to charge from solar first and reserve enough energy for evening cooking and overnight loads.
That schedule made the biggest difference to my bill. Before storage, I used grid power after sunset, especially between 4 and 9 p.m., when rates were highest. Now, the battery usually carries the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and dishwasher through that window. On sunny days, I often reach bedtime with 30 to 40 percent remaining. That feels much better than sending all my midday solar surplus back to the grid for a small credit.
During the first full month, my bill dropped from about $185 to $92. It is not a dramatic zero-dollar result, because winter clouds and fixed utility charges still exist, but saving roughly $93 monthly is real money for us. I also stopped worrying about accidentally running the dryer during peak hours. The app shows where each kilowatt-hour goes, and that feedback has made our household more disciplined.
One small troubleshooting moment happened during a cloudy weekend. The battery stopped discharging at 18 percent, even though the app showed plenty of stored energy. I initially thought the solar inverter had failed, but the installer pointed out that backup reserve had accidentally been raised to 20 percent during a firmware update. I changed the setting back, restarted the monitoring gateway, and everything worked normally that evening. That was reassuring.
