On most summer evenings, I used to watch our electricity meter climb as the oven, dishwasher, and air conditioner all ran together. After installing a 10-kWh home battery with our rooftop solar, I changed that routine almost completely. The battery now carries the house through those expensive evening hours.

I scheduled charging from excess midday solar, then set the inverter to discharge during our utility’s evening peak window. That simple adjustment has been the biggest practical win. Our monthly bill dropped from roughly $180 in July to about $75, even though our usage habits barely changed at all this year.

The savings are not magic; they depend on sunny days and the utility rate structure. On cloudy stretches, the battery sometimes reaches only 40% by late afternoon, so I preserve it for dinner instead of running the clothes dryer. I like that the app shows everything clearly on my phone.

I occasionally call it my “solar assistant deye,” although that exact phrase is really just a label I use for the Deye monitoring screen. It makes checking battery behavior before bed pleasantly quick, especially after busy days.

My only real hiccup happened during a firmware update. The inverter stopped showing battery discharge for nearly an hour, and I initially thought the lithium battery had failed. The lights stayed on because grid power automatically took over, but I lost that evening’s peak savings temporarily that evening only.

I restarted the monitoring gateway and checked the cable connections, then contacted the installer. They confirmed the update had stalled and finished it remotely. Since then, I have kept a small note of error codes and avoided changing settings when the system is actively discharging during the evening peak period.
