Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
I installed a home solar battery last spring, mostly because our electricity bill jumped whenever the heat pump ran in the evening. The setup was a yinglong battery system paired with my rooftop solar panels and a hybrid inverter.
The useful part was seeing the battery reserve fill before dinner, then automatically switch from grid power when rates went up. Before storage, I would start the dishwasher and clothes dryer after work without thinking. Now I wait until the battery has enough charge, which sounds small but has changed our routine.
In the first full month, our peak-hour usage dropped from roughly 320 kWh to 105 kWh. The bill fell by about $74, even though we had several cloudy days. For me, the savings came from shifting expensive evening consumption, not from chasing a perfect zero bill.
One minor hiccup happened during a firmware update. The app showed the battery at 3% while the inverter displayed 41%. I turned off the backup circuit, waited five minutes, and restarted the system as support suggested. The readings matched again, and I have not seen the mismatch since. That moment taught me to keep the manual and not panic over one strange screen.
The biggest practical difference is quieter evenings: the battery carries lights, Wi-Fi, refrigerator, and sometimes the heat pump without any noticeable interruption. I check the state of charge once or twice a day, but otherwise it simply works.
I am considering adding another battery before winter, although I want to compare another year of bills first. My advice: size storage for evening use and learn the backup settings.
