Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Running our solar battery through its first summer has changed the way I think about electricity bills. Before installation, our panels covered daytime use, but the house still pulled expensive power between 4pm and 9pm, when cooking, charging the car, and running air conditioning all happened together.
I chose a growatt inverter 10kw compatible LiFePO4 Battery because I wanted something sized for evening demand without complicated maintenance. The installer mounted it in the garage, next to the inverter, and the wiring was finished in one day. The only surprise was how quiet it is. I expected a noticeable hum, but from the hallway I can barely tell it is operating.
The biggest practical difference shows up on my bill. I now set the battery to charge from solar until late afternoon and discharge during peak pricing. On a typical weekday, it supplies around 6–8kWh after sunset. Our old peak usage was roughly 10kWh, so the reduction is not theoretical. My monthly bill used to sit near $180 in summer; the last comparable month was $112. Weather and rates vary, but saving about $60–$70 has been repeatable.
One evening I noticed the battery stopped discharging at 30%. I initially thought something had failed, but the app showed backup reserve mode was enabled after a firmware update. I lowered the reserve to 20%, and normal discharge returned immediately. That small hiccup taught me to check settings before calling the installer.
After three months, I am especially pleased with the routine. I do not think about peak rates while making dinner anymore, and the battery has handled several short outages without interruption. It is not a flashy gadget; it is simply a quiet buffer between our sunny afternoons and expensive evenings. For anyone considering one, I would measure actual evening consumption first, rather than choosing capacity based only on panel size.
