Every evening last summer, I started checking our electricity meter before bed. At first, it was just curiosity after installing a 10-kWh home battery beside our solar inverter, but the numbers quickly became motivating. Our household uses most power after work—cooking, laundry, and running the heat pump—when solar production has already faded. Now the battery stores surplus energy at midday and discharges automatically through the evening peak.
Before storage, our monthly bill averaged about €145. After adding the battery, it settled around €88 during the bright months. Avoiding expensive grid electricity between 5 and 9 p.m. is the biggest difference. I set the battery reserve to 20 percent, so it still has useful backup capacity without sacrificing too much daily savings. Watching the app show “grid import: 0.0 kWh” while dinner is cooking feels surprisingly satisfying.
Setup felt easy. The installer mounted the battery in our utility room, connected it to the existing wechselrichter, and spent an hour tuning the energy-management settings. I had to learn that “self-consumption” is not the same as total independence. On several rainy days, the battery emptied before midnight, and we still bought power from the grid. That was disappointing initially, but realistic.
My small troubleshooting moment came when the app stopped updating one morning. The battery was working, and the status light was normal. Restarting the monitoring gateway fixed it in about five minutes; no reboot of the battery was needed. Since then, I check meter readings rather than trusting the app blindly.
For me, the value is practical rather than glamorous: fewer peak-hour purchases, quieter evenings without worrying about tariffs, and a clearer reason to use appliances during daylight. The solar battery has not eliminated our bill, but it has made our rooftop solar noticeably more useful every day.
