Running my evening loads from a growatt spf3500es LiFePO4 Battery has changed how I use our rooftop solar system. Before installing it, I sent excess afternoon generation straight back to the grid and bought power again after dinner. Now, the battery charges while the panels are producing and carries us through the expensive evening hours.
Our utility’s peak rate runs from 4 to 9 p.m., so that window is where I notice the biggest difference. On a typical clear day, the battery reaches full charge before lunch. I set the inverter to prioritize solar charging and discharge during peak hours. My bill used to hover around $180 in summer; last month it was $112, even though our overall consumption was similar. That $68 reduction is more meaningful to me than a flashy efficiency claim because I can see it on the utility statement.
Installation was straightforward, although I did spend an afternoon checking cable sizes, breaker ratings, and the battery settings. The most practical feature has been the battery monitor: I can glance at state of charge and inverter load from rather than wondering why the grid meter is moving.
One rainy weekend, the state of charge fell lower than expected. I initially blamed weak sunlight, but discovered the inverter’s battery priority setting had reset after a firmware update. Restoring it took two minutes, and the system resumed normal charging that afternoon. Since then, I check the monitoring screen after updates instead of assuming everything stayed unchanged.
I am not energy independent: several cloudy days in a row still pull electricity from the grid. For my home, though, this LiFePO4 solar battery has made evening power noticeably cheaper and quieter to manage. I would expand the storage capacity eventually, but I am happy with the current balance of battery backup, solar self-consumption, and predictable peak-rate savings.
