Every evening, my solar battery now takes over at sunset, and that simple change has made our electricity bills noticeably less painful during peak season.
I installed a deye lifepo4 battery beside the inverter last spring, mainly because our utility charges its highest rates from four to nine p.m. The installation was less dramatic than I expected. The electrician mounted the battery, connected the hybrid inverter, checked the monitoring app, and walked me through the settings. I chose a reserve level of twenty percent, so we still have backup power if the grid fails, but most of the stored energy is available for evening use.
During sunny days, our rooftop panels fill the battery by early afternoon. Instead of exporting every extra kilowatt-hour for a modest credit, we use that energy after dinner for lights, the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and usually the washing machine. Before storage, our monthly bill climbed to around $210 in the hottest months. Now it is commonly between $95 and $120, depending on air-conditioning. The biggest improvement is not seeing the meter jump every time the heat pump starts during an expensive hour. Based on the app's energy history, we have shifted roughly 8–11 kilowatt-hours per day away from peak pricing.
One small hiccup came in July, when the battery stopped discharging at sunset. The app showed it was at 100 percent, but the house was quietly pulling from the grid. I rebooted the inverter first, which did nothing. Then I noticed a scheduled firmware update had changed the operating mode from self-consumption to backup reserve. After switching it back and saving the setting, discharge resumed within a minute. That was a useful reminder that battery capacity is only half the story; the control settings matter just as much.
I have not expanded; the current setup works.
