Running my home on solar power used to mean checking the weather before bed and hoping the grid would stay friendly. Installing a growatt battery changed that routine. I chose a 10kWh solar energy storage unit after watching my evening electricity use climb when the oven, heat pump, and lights all came on together. The installer finished in one day, and the setup was less disruptive than I expected. They mounted the battery beside the inverter, updated the monitoring app, and walked me through backup settings. I set it to charge from rooftop solar during daylight and discharge between 4pm and 9pm, which is when my utility charges its highest rate.
The first week gave me the satisfying part. By dinner time, my battery was usually around 80% full. Instead of buying expensive peak electricity, my house quietly ran from stored energy. My daily bill savings were modest on cloudy days, but often around $2–$3 per day in summer. That adds up to roughly $70 a month, although I know the exact amount depends on weather and rates.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. During a brief outage, my Wi-Fi router restarted and the app showed the battery as offline. I initially worried the backup power had failed, but the lights stayed on. After the router came back, the monitoring connection returned within a few minutes. The battery had been doing its job; only the internet status was missing.
Now I pay closer attention to state of charge than app notifications. I keep the battery reserve at 25%, enough for overnight essentials, and let solar charging handle the rest. I also shifted laundry and dishwasher use into sunny hours, stretching the storage further. The biggest surprise is how uneventful the system feels day to day. It is not flashy, but predictable.
