Solution Solar Battery
I installed a victron lifepo4 battery in my garage last autumn, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity from the grid. I use eight rooftop solar panels, a Victron inverter, and one 10 kWh LiFePO4 battery.
On sunny days, the panels run the refrigerator, internet equipment, and washing machine first. Any extra solar power charges the battery, usually reaching 95 percent by mid-afternoon. After dinner, the battery carries the house through the peak-rate period. Before storage, we regularly paid around $4.50 on a normal winter day; now that same day is closer to $2.70. The exact figure varies with weather, but avoiding those evening rates has made the biggest difference. Our monthly bill has dropped by roughly $45 to $70, depending on how cloudy the month is.
My favorite practical feature is being able to see the battery state of charge on my phone. I can tell when the kettle, dryer, or heat pump is pulling hard, and I have stopped guessing whether the system is working. I also changed a few habits: I run the dishwasher after lunch and leave the battery reserve at 20 percent for outages.
I did have a troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped charging early one afternoon because a communication cable had worked loose near the inverter. There was no dramatic failure; the monitoring app simply showed an odd battery warning. I powered everything down, reseated the cable, and restarted the system. It was back to normal in about ten minutes. Since then, I have labeled the connections and checked them during maintenance.
After several months, the battery has been quiet, reliable, and more useful than I expected. It has not eliminated my electric bill, but this home energy storage system makes solar power available when we actually need it, which feels like the whole point.
