Solution Solar Battery
Keeping my solar battery charged has changed the way I use electricity at home. I installed a 10kWh lithium battery alongside my rooftop panels last summer, mainly because our evening power rates had become painful. The installation itself was less dramatic than I expected: the electrician finished in one day, mounted the battery in the garage, and connected it to a hybrid inverter. I spent more time clearing shelves than watching the actual wiring.
The biggest difference shows up between 4pm and 9pm. Before the battery, I would come home, turn on the oven, air conditioner, and water heater, and watch the meter race. Now the panels fill the battery during the day, and the battery supplies most of that evening load. Our monthly bill dropped from roughly $185 to $110 during the first comparable month. It is not a miracle—cloudy weeks still hurt—but shifting usage away from peak hours has been genuinely noticeable.
When the battery hit a low state of charge during a rainy weekend, my app showed it had switched to grid power. I initially thought the solar battery had failed, but the backup reserve was simply set too low. I raised the reserve from 10% to 20%, and everything worked normally afterward.
For anyone comparing a 5 kw inverter price, I would look beyond the sticker. Battery capacity, installation labor, warranty, and usable output affected my real cost far more than the inverter alone. My system is not completely off-grid, and I still use the utility on dark winter mornings, but the home energy storage has made our electricity habits calmer. I run the dishwasher after lunch, charge our e-bike from midday solar, and leave the battery for the expensive evening period.
After several months, I check the battery app about once a week.
