Overnight, my solar battery changed the way I use electricity more than I expected. Before installing it, I sent most of my solar power back to the grid during the day and bought it back in the evening. My main goal was simple: use stored energy through the expensive peak hours and stop watching the meter climb after dinner. I installed a Growatt inverter with a 10kWh lithium battery last spring. I had seen the phrase "solar growatt" repeatedly while comparing solar storage systems, but my decision really came down to local installer support and the battery warranty.
On sunny days, the battery usually reaches full charge by early afternoon. I set it to preserve a small reserve for outages, then let it discharge from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., when our utility rate is highest. That schedule has made the biggest difference to my bill. My monthly electricity charge used to hover around $180 in summer; after adding the battery, comparable months have been closer to $110, even though our household habits have not changed much. I still run the dishwasher and induction cooktop at night, but I am using stored solar energy instead of peak grid power.
The most satisfying moment is seeing the battery discharge steadily while the air conditioner runs. I do not treat the app forecast as gospel, because cloudy afternoons can leave less capacity than expected. Still, the energy monitoring screen gives me enough warning to adjust. One minor troubleshooting issue happened in July: the battery stopped discharging after a firmware update. I found the inverter showing standby, even though the state of charge was 64%. I power-cycled the system using the installer-recommended shutdown sequence, waited five minutes, and restarted it. The discharge resumed that evening.
