Running my solar battery through a full summer has changed how I think about electricity. Before installing it, I sent most of my rooftop solar power straight to the grid during the afternoon, then bought electricity back during the expensive evening hours. Now, the battery stores that excess energy and runs much of my house after sunset.

The biggest difference shows up between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. I usually start cooking, run the dishwasher, and charge phones and laptops during that window. Previously, those habits pushed my bill higher every month. Now the inverter draws from the battery instead. On clear days, my evening electricity use from the grid is almost nothing, and my monthly bill has dropped by roughly 35 to 45 percent compared with last year. The exact savings vary with weather, but the peak-hour reduction is obvious.

My setup uses a growatt mppt charge controller with a lithium battery bank and rooftop solar panels. I like being able to check battery voltage, solar production, and household consumption from the monitoring app. The numbers are especially useful when deciding whether to run the washing machine immediately or wait until the panels are producing strongly.

I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging overnight even though the charge level was healthy. I checked the schedule and found that a backup-reserve setting had been changed during the update. Restoring the reserve percentage fixed it within minutes. That experience taught me not to assume a hardware failure first; checking battery settings and inverter status can save a service call.

The system is not completely hands-off, and cloudy stretches still require some grid power. However, having stored solar energy available every evening makes the investment feel practical. I am using more of my own renewable energy, relying less on peak-rate electricity, and watching the savings accumulate month after month.
