Running my home on stored solar power has changed the way I think about electricity. Before installing my battery, I watched the utility meter spin forward every evening, especially when cooking dinner and charging our plug-in hybrid. Now my solar panels fill the battery during the afternoon, and I use that energy after sunset instead of buying expensive grid power.
I chose a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery paired with a growatt 6000ue inverter. The installer mounted it in the garage. Setup took most of a day. The only surprise was needing a stronger Wi-Fi signal; the monitoring app kept dropping until I added a mesh node nearby. Since then, it has been steady, and I can see battery state of charge, solar production, and household consumption from my phone.
The biggest difference shows up between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., when our utility charges its highest rate. I set the battery to prioritize self-consumption and reserve twenty percent for outages. On sunny days, it carries the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, dishwasher, and evening air conditioning without pulling from the grid. Our monthly bill fell from around $210 last summer to roughly $95, though weather and usage vary. That is about $115 saved in a typical month, which feels more meaningful than the glossy payback estimates I saw online.
One storm night gave me a reality check. The battery switched to backup power without drama, but I initially forgot that the water heater was on the backup circuit. It drained the reserve faster than expected. I moved that load off the backed-up panel, and now the battery comfortably lasts through overnight outages.
I still check the app occasionally and clean the panels myself. For me, this solar battery is less about energy independence slogans and more about predictable evenings and a smaller electricity bill.
