Owning a solar battery has changed how I use electricity at home. Last summer I installed a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery beside my existing rooftop solar inverter. The main reason was simple: my evening power bill was consistently higher than I expected, especially when the air conditioner ran after dinner.
Before storage, I sent plenty of daytime solar energy back to the grid, then bought electricity during peak hours. Now the battery charges between late morning and mid-afternoon. Around 4:30 p.m., it starts supplying the house. I usually see it carrying the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, television, and sometimes the air conditioner until bedtime.
My average monthly bill fell from about $168 to $104 over the first three months. It is not a dramatic zero bill, but the reduction feels real, particularly because our utility company charges more from 4 to 9 p.m. The battery app shows roughly 8 to 9 kWh discharged on a normal day, which matches what I hoped for.
One small surprise was how much the settings mattered. At first, I left the backup reserve at 30%. That protected us during outages, but it also meant I was buying grid power sooner than necessary. I changed the reserve to 18% after checking local outage history, and the savings improved without making me nervous.
I also keep a small power inverter 12v to 220v in the garage for camping and emergency use. It is not connected to the home battery; I bought it for running a phone charger, LED lamp, or small fan from a spare 12V battery. It has been handy, although I learned not to plug high wattage appliances into it.
Overall, the savings feel practical, and I would make this purchase again.
