4 a.m. Last summer I installed a 24 volt lifepo4 battery bank beside my inverter, after months of watching evening electricity rates eat into the savings from my rooftop solar panels. It is not a glamorous setup, but it has changed how I use energy after sunset.
My house has a small modest 5kW solar array, and before the battery, the system exported most afternoon production while I bought expensive power between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m. The installer mounted the battery indoors, added a fuse and disconnect, and programmed the hybrid inverter to charge from solar first. Setup took one long day. I spent the evening checking cable labels, battery temperature, and the monitoring app rather than admiring the neat wiring.
The biggest practical win is peak-hour bill savings. On a sunny day, my panels fill the battery to roughly 90% by mid-afternoon. At dinner, I run the induction cooktop, dishwasher, heat-pump water heater, and sometimes laundry from stored energy. I usually finish the night near 35%, then leave enough reserve for a brief outage. My utility statement dropped about 25% in the first full month, despite similar household habits.
That number varies with weather, of course. During three cloudy winter days, the battery never reached full, so I still imported some evening power. Still, the solar battery reduced the most painful peak usage, and I noticed fewer sudden jumps on the utility graph. I also like seeing the inverter prioritize my own solar energy instead of sending it straight to the grid for a small credit.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. One morning the monitoring app showed “battery offline,” although the house still had power. I checked the disconnect, found it had tripped after a brief storm, and reset it. The system came back online within a minute.
