Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Keeping my solar battery system simple was more important to me than chasing the biggest capacity number. I installed a 12kWh LiFePO4 battery last spring, mainly to use more of my rooftop solar after sunset. The product page carried the phrase “skat i battery 12 26 lifepo4,” which I treated as a search label rather than a meaningful specification.
Before installation, our evening electricity use was predictable: cooking, laundry, lights, and the heat-pump water heater all came on after the solar output faded. Now the battery charges from midday surplus, then discharges between 4 and 9 p.m. My inverter app shows the change clearly. On sunny days, grid imports during those hours have nearly disappeared.
Our monthly bill fell from roughly $185 to $112, although rates and weather vary. The biggest win is not the dollar amount; it is avoiding the expensive peak tariff. I still buy power on cloudy mornings, but the battery handles the costly window almost automatically.
The only hiccup came during the first week. The battery stopped discharging at 28%, even though the app showed plenty remaining. I found the backup reserve had been set too high. Lowering it to 15% fixed the problem, and I left that reserve in place for outages.
After six months, the battery is quiet, cool, and boring in the best possible way. I check the state of charge with my morning coffee, but rarely touch the settings. For my household, this solar storage setup has been less about energy independence slogans and more about making everyday electricity cheaper. If you size one, I would prioritize usable capacity and a responsive inverter app over flashy extras.
