Solution Solar Battery
Using my solar battery after sunset has changed the way I think about our electricity bill. I installed a 10 kWh home energy storage system last summer, mainly to stop buying expensive grid power during the evening peak. Our rooftop solar array usually fills the battery by mid-afternoon, and then the battery carries the house through cooking, laundry, and the children’s bath time.
The biggest surprise was how visible the savings became. Before storage, our monthly bill averaged about $185 in the hottest months. After adding the battery, it fell to roughly $95, even though our air-conditioner ran just as often. I set the inverter to reserve 20 percent for outages and use the remaining capacity during peak-rate hours. That simple schedule has worked better than trying to micromanage every appliance. On sunny days, we finish dinner using stored solar energy instead of paying the utility’s highest rate.
I did have one troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging one evening, and the monitoring app showed it as “standby.” The system had installed a firmware update. I checked the breaker, confirmed the battery’s state of charge, and restarted the inverter through the manufacturer’s instructions. It resumed after about ten minutes. Since then, I have left automatic updates enabled but glance at the app the next morning.
I also like having backup power for short outages. It does not run every large load indefinitely, but it keeps the refrigerator, internet, lights, and a few outlets operating without the noisy generator we used before. My quickvue dashboard makes checking solar production, battery percentage, and household consumption easy enough that I use it.
The battery was a significant upfront expense, but the peak-hour bill savings and quieter backup have made it worthwhile for our home. I am considering adding another battery module before next summer.
