Just six months ago, I added a 10-kWh solar battery to my rooftop system, mainly because our evening electricity use was eating up the bill. Before storage, I sent excess midday solar back to the grid and then bought it back during the expensive peak window. I live in a coastal area, and the air conditioner runs hard after sunset.
The setup was less disruptive than I expected. The installer mounted the battery beside the inverter in my utility room, updated the monitoring app, and showed me how to set a reserve level. I chose 20%, so there is still backup capacity during an outage. My only complaint was the app initially reported “offline” even while the battery was charging. A router restart fixed it; no hardware fault was involved.
What I notice most is the change after 5pm. On sunny days, the battery is usually full by midafternoon. It then powers the air conditioner, lights, refrigerator, and washing machine instead of pulling from the grid. My utility bill fell from roughly $180 to $105 per month, although weather and usage vary. That is about $75 saved monthly, which feels more meaningful than the sales forecast because I can see the battery working on the flow screen.
During one short outage, the transfer was quick enough that my lights barely flickered. I did notice the battery fan running faster, though, when several appliances started together. I turned off the water heater and watched the load settle. That moment taught me not to treat backup power like unlimited electricity. My solar battery is not magic, but it has made evening consumption calmer and more predictable. During a trip to Djibouti, I saw how valuable dependable storage can be in harsh sunny conditions, which made me appreciate this system more.
