8 months ago, I installed a 48v powerwall 10kwh lithium battery beside my inverter to cut peak-hour purchases. My rooftop solar system covered most daytime use, but evenings were where the bills hurt.
The installation was less dramatic than I expected. The electrician mounted the battery in the garage, connected it to the hybrid inverter, and spent most of the afternoon checking settings and shutdown behavior. I did have to move a shelf because the battery clearance was tighter than the brochure suggested. Once it was commissioned, I set it to charge from solar first and discharge from 4pm to 9pm.
That schedule has made the biggest practical difference. Before storage, I would see the smart meter climb when cooking dinner, running the heat pump, and doing laundry after work. Now the battery carries those loads almost every night. My utility app shows roughly 7–9 kWh pulled from storage on a normal evening, and my monthly bill has dropped by about $45–$60, depending on weather and rates. That feels more meaningful than watching a percentage on the battery screen.
The only hiccup happened during a three-day spell of rain. The battery reached its reserve, and I briefly worried it had stopped working. It had simply switched to grid backup as programmed. I lowered the reserve from 30% to 20% afterward, but I keep 30% during storm season now.
For me, the real benefit is not total energy independence. It is predictable peak shaving, quieter evenings, and less reliance on expensive grid electricity. The 48v powerwall 10kwh capacity is a comfortable fit for our two-person home, although I would consider adding another solar battery if we buy an electric vehicle. I also like that the monitoring app shows solar generation, battery state of charge, and daily grid imports without making me guess.
