After two months of watching our electricity bill jump every summer, I added a 10 kWh solar battery to our rooftop system. The installation was less dramatic than I expected, but the first week taught me more than the sales brochure did.

The installer mounted the battery in our garage, beside the existing marine inverter. He explained that the battery would charge from excess solar during the day and discharge after 4:30pm, when our utility rate rises. Setup took most of a morning, including the monitoring app.

What impressed me first was how quietly it changed our routine. Before storage, I would run the dishwasher at noon and still buy power while cooking dinner. Now I let the battery handle the evening load: refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and usually one induction burner. On sunny days, the state of charge is around 85% at sunset, and it usually reaches roughly 25% by bedtime. That sounds small, but it has made the biggest visible difference on my bill.

Our first full month with the solar battery cut grid usage from 612 kWh to 428, even though we had several cloudy days. The bill fell by about $46, mostly because we avoided peak rates between 4:30pm and 9:00pm. It is not a life-changing fortune, but the savings are predictable, and I no longer feel punished for making dinner after work. With net metering still in place, I value sending surplus solar to the battery instead of exporting it cheaply.

There was one minor scare. During a storm, the app showed “battery offline,” while the house was still powered. I checked the breaker, restarted the communications hub, and waited ten minutes. The connection returned without calling support. Later, I learned the garage Wi-Fi signal is weak near the battery, so I added a mesh node.
