Using my solar battery after work has changed the way I think about electricity bills. Before installation, I mostly watched my panels produce power during the day and then bought expensive grid electricity in the evening. Now my sunsynk hybrid inverter charges the home energy storage battery from solar surplus and keeps the house running through the most expensive hours.
The difference showed up quickly on my bill. My utility uses time-of-use rates, with a steep peak period from 4 to 9 p.m. That used to be when we cooked, showered, watched television, and ran the dishwasher. Since adding the lithium battery, it usually discharges around 4:30, so the inverter handles those loads instead of the grid.
On cloudy days, the battery does not last until morning, but even partial coverage makes a noticeable difference. My monthly bill fell from roughly $180 to $95, though weather and household habits obviously move that number around.
The most useful part has been the monitoring app. I can see solar generation, battery state of charge, and current house load without walking to the garage. I set a 20% backup reserve because we get short outages in winter. That reserve has already kept our router, fridge, and a few lights running during two brief blackouts.
I did have one minor scare. The battery stopped charging one afternoon, and the app showed a communication warning. I power-cycled the inverter as the manual suggested, checked the internet connection, and waited about five minutes. Everything came back online, and the battery resumed charging. It has not repeated since, but that reminded me this is home energy equipment, not a set-and-forget gadget.
For me, the solar battery pays off mainly by shifting power into peak hours. I am not completely energy independent, but using more of my own solar power daily.
