Solution Solar Battery
Replacing our aging lead-acid backup battery with a growatt spa compatible LiFePO4 Battery has made the biggest difference to how we use our solar system. Before the upgrade, our panels exported plenty of electricity during the afternoon, but we still bought power from the grid after sunset. That felt wasteful, especially during peak-rate hours when cooking, laundry, and the heat pump were running.
The installation itself was fairly straightforward. I mounted the battery in the garage beside the inverter, connected the communication cable, and updated the charge settings through the inverter menu. I set it to charge from solar first and discharge during our evening peak period. The battery management system showed the state of charge clearly, which made it easy to see how much energy was available.
After a week of normal use, our evening grid consumption dropped noticeably. On sunny days, the battery usually carries us from around 5 p.m. until bedtime, running lights, the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, television, and sometimes the dishwasher. Our daily bill savings are not dramatic every single day, but avoiding peak electricity rates has reduced our monthly bill by roughly 20 to 30 percent compared with the same season before installation. That is more useful to me than chasing impressive maximum output figures.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging one evening even though it showed plenty of capacity. I found that the inverter had switched into a backup-only setting after a brief grid outage. Restarting the inverter and restoring the normal self-consumption mode fixed it. Since then, I check the operating mode after outages.
The main practical benefit is flexibility. We are using more of our own solar energy instead of sending it back to the grid for a small credit. The LiFePO4 battery has been quiet, predictable, and easy to monitor, and I would expand the storage capacity later if our evening electricity use increases.
