I installed a lithium battery for solar last autumn, mainly because our evening electricity bills had become ridiculous. We already had six rooftop panels, but by dinner time the house was pulling power from the grid just when rates climbed. The battery has changed that routine more than I expected.

Our system is a 10 kWh home energy storage unit. On a sunny day, the panels usually fill it by mid-afternoon. Once the sun goes down, it runs the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and sometimes our heat-pump water heater. I set the battery to discharge during our utility's 4–9 p.m. peak window. That simple schedule is where I have noticed the real savings. Our average monthly bill fell from about $185 to $105, although winter weather still pushes it higher. In the best summer month, we paid only $62.

I like checking the monitoring app after dinner. It shows the battery supplying the house instead of the meter icon spinning toward the grid. That feels more useful than watching solar production numbers at noon, when we are barely home anyway. We have not become independent—we still buy electricity on cloudy stretches—but our peak-hour consumption is dramatically lower.

The annoying moment came during the first week. The battery stopped discharging at 8 p.m., even though it was full. I found that I had entered the peak schedule in the wrong time zone. Correcting it took two minutes, and the installer confirmed the settings remotely. Since then, operation has been quiet and automatic.

For me, the best part of solar battery storage is not backup-power bragging rights. It is using more of our solar energy and avoiding the expensive hours every day. I would size the battery, though; a larger battery is not automatically better if your panels cannot recharge it.
