November was the month I finally stopped guessing what my electricity bill would look like. After adding a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate solar battery to my rooftop system, I started using stored power after sunset instead of buying it during the expensive evening hours.
Before the battery, my solar panels produced plenty at lunchtime, but our family used most electricity between 5:30pm and 9pm. The battery charges from excess solar during the day, then runs the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, television, and occasionally the dishwasher overnight.
My first full month with it lowered my bill by about $46, even though we had several cloudy days. The biggest saving comes from avoiding peak rates, not from generating more solar energy.
I did have one mildly annoying troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging one evening, although the app showed 68% remaining. I checked the breaker and noticed the communication cable to my on grid solar inverter was loose after some garage work. I reseated it, restarted the system, and normal operation returned. It was not dramatic, but I appreciated finding a fix myself instead of waiting for a service visit.
The battery has not eliminated my electric bill. During long rainy stretches, I still import power, and winter production is noticeably weaker. Still, the solar battery gives me predictable control over when I use grid electricity.
For my home, the best benefit is boring reliability. I charge in daylight, use stored energy after dark, and watch fewer peak hours appear on the bill. If I expanded later, I would add capacity only after tracking another year of usage. For now, this setup feels practical rather than flashy, and that is exactly what I wanted.
