Keeping my lights on during evening blackouts was the reason I added a home solar battery system last summer. I already had six rooftop panels, but my grid bills jumped whenever the family cooked, showered, and used the air conditioner after sunset. The battery changed that routine more than I expected.

My installer paired a 10kWh lithium battery with a 3kva hybrid inverter. The installation took a day. They mounted the inverter beside the distribution board and placed the battery in a cool utility room. I liked seeing the monitoring app show solar generation, battery state of charge, and household consumption in one screen. The frustrating part was that the Wi-Fi connection dropped twice during the first week.

The biggest benefit appears between 5:00pm and 9:00pm, when my electricity tariff is highest. The battery now runs our refrigerator, internet router, lights, television, and one air conditioner. Before storage, those evening hours added roughly $4–$5 a day in my area. After installation, my monthly bill fell by about $70–$90, depending on cloudy weather and how often we use cooling.

One small lesson came during a rainy weekend. I noticed the battery was sitting at 18% by dinner time, because several gray days had limited charging. I had set the backup reserve too high at 30%. Lowering it to 20% gave me more capacity without sacrificing emergency protection. The app also helped me spot that our freezer was cycling more than expected; replacing its door seal saved battery energy.

I am not off-grid, and I still buy power during winter stretches. Still, solar battery storage has made our consumption calmer and bills more predictable. That’s the upgrade I notice month—not when the power goes out.
