Early last spring I finally added a home battery to the rooftop solar setup we had been using for two years. The panels covered most daytime use, but our evening cooking, laundry, and heating pulled plenty from the grid, especially during peak rates. I went with a mecer inverter and lithium battery sized mainly to shift that evening consumption, not to run the whole house indefinitely.

The installer walked me through the app and set it to charge from excess solar during the day. At first I kept checking the battery percentage like it was an appliance I needed to supervise, but after a week it just became part of the house.

The biggest difference has been between five and nine in the evening. On sunny days, the battery carries our lights, fridge, router, and dinner cooking through the peak period instead of exporting cheap midday electricity and buying it back later. My monthly bill has dropped by roughly a third compared with the same months last year, though weather and rates make that comparison imperfect. I draw from the grid on cloudy stretches, and I don't pretend the battery makes electricity free.

One small hiccup came during the first month, when the battery stopped discharging at my reserve level. I had set the backup reserve too high after reading about outage protection in the app. I lowered it a little and watched the next evening cycle work normally. Nothing was broken, but it taught me to check settings before blaming hardware.

I also learned that battery capacity matters less than matching it to our actual routine. A bigger unit would sit unused much of the year. For us, the quiet, automatic handoff is the win. I notice the savings on the bill and stop thinking about power cuts during ordinary evenings.
