I installed a 10 kWh LiFePO4 battery beside my solar inverter last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity in the evening. Before the battery, my solar panels produced plenty during the day, but most of that power went back to the grid while our family was at work and school. After sunset, the dishwasher, induction cooktop, and heat pump pulled electricity at the worst possible time.

The biggest difference has been our peak-hour bill. I set the battery to charge from solar during the afternoon, then discharge from about 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. On sunny days, it usually covers nearly all of our evening use. Our monthly bill dropped from roughly $180 to between $95 and $115, depending on weather and heating demand. That saving is more noticeable than I expected because the battery is not doing anything dramatic; it is simply shifting the energy we already generated.

I spent a little time comparing battery specifications before buying. The listing mentioned “lifepo4 ah,” which confused me at first because amp-hours alone do not tell you the whole storage capacity. I eventually focused on usable kilowatt-hours, inverter compatibility, cycle rating, and the battery management system. That was much more useful than comparing headline numbers.

I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. During the first week, the battery stopped discharging at night even though the app showed plenty of charge. The problem turned out to be a backup reserve setting left at 30 percent. Once I lowered it to 15 percent, the system worked normally. I now keep that reserve because short outages are common here, but I understand why some capacity remains unavailable.

So far, the solar battery has been quiet, automatic, and refreshingly boring. I check the monitoring app a few times a week, but otherwise it just reduces grid consumption in the background. That practical, everyday saving is exactly what I hoped for.
